You generally didn't--and still don't--see a lot of white on comic covers, and I always thought it frequently made for a nice cover.
The story: "Deadly Dreams of Doctor Destiny!" by Gardner Fox, Mike Sekowsky, and Bernard Sachs. Several JLAers have strange dreams where they are stuck with odd accessories, like a metal face mask or a mysterious ring--and then they are defeated by some of their foes. I wonder if this is a plot by the nefarious Dr.Destiny?
Roll Call: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Atom, Hawkman
Notable Moments: The first time the Joker showed up in the pages of the JLA; Sekowsky makes him look paunchy and old--not exactly terrifying.
I always liked Dr.Destiny; he seemed like a great villain for the all-powerful JLA, even if he still is just a regular guy in prison greys.
so this makes 6 issues with no Aquaman on the cover...
ReplyDeleteAnother cover with only three characters on it. I had forgotten this one, because to me the story is so dull. I do like the end where the Atom basically says, "Me, me, let ME knock him out! I didn't get to do anything else this time!" which made me think Fox & Schultz were very cognizant of the difficulty in getting all the members into action. :-)
ReplyDeleteYES! The first JLA comic I ever read, one of my favourites. Sekowsky's Joker looks kind of creepy to me, really off model though!
ReplyDeleteYeah, this one has a pretty dynamic cover, each of the heroes being overcome in some way. The story itself is sort of weird, but I suppose it is a clever plot by Dr. Destiny, as Silver Age plots go.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the good Dr., it seems to me he didn't get enough attention. I'll have to remember to make use of him in my JLA mod. His episode on JLU was freakin' fantastic!
You know that Incan (or was it Mayan?) priest that was Hawkman's enemy? He had potential. With a little reworking of his origin (it was pretty good, and wouldn't need much) he could have been a decent recurring villain, and let's face it. Hawkman needs all the villains he can get.
