When you have a cover as dynamic as this, just get the heck out of the way and let the book sell itself. Because of Neal Adams, somebody in DC's advertising department got to go to lunch a little early that day.
I love this cover. However, on close examination....is Aquaman, The Flash, etc actually floating in the air? GL looks like he's standing, but...how can he be? Hmmm....
The thing I notice about Neal Adams' Hawkman is that he can never make up his mind as to whether Carter has stripes down his shorts, or down his leggings. In this case, it's his legs. My bet is that next time you see him, the stripe will be on his shorts. Go figure.
Good catch Russel. Adams was notoriously inconsistent on Hawkman, and one of the few to put stripes on his leggings. Notice the lack of the hawk head on his chest symbol as well.
Who did the "STAR-STUDDED SPECTACULARS" lettering? Was that Gaspar Saladino? I thought DC did that sort of late 60's/early 70's hippily deformed text really well.

ReplyDeleteGood eye, Russell!
Sometimes, sleight-of-hand is one of the best tools an artist has!

one of the reason neal adams is NEAL ADAMS. its a brilliant cover, then you put it down, walk away, and go "heyyyy, wait a minute!!"
ReplyDeleteLove it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a perspective thing. They're obviously holding it just above the not-so-well known JLA trap door.

I would have enjoyed some alternate universe where Ray, Carter, and Ollie had to duke it out for a JLA spot.
ReplyDeleteMy money is on...
